ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD: Watershed Outreach Program, Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain, Biloxi Sun Herald

The Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain's Watershed Outreach Program is the winner of the Sun Herald's Environmental Honor Award, chosen by jurors from Mississippi State University.

The outreach program includes a series of watershed forums, educational material and activities, signage, a puppet show and a documentary film.

The Land Trust partners with a variety of agencies, organizations and local citizens to accomplish the individual goals of each watershed. Those actively participating in the program include the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.

4H One-Day Workshop

On March 25,2009 MSU Extension 4H sponsored a one-day Adopt-A-Stream Workshop. The workshop had 18 participants. The one-day program provided classroom study in stream ecology, mapping of watersheds, nonpoint source pollution, water quality monitoring and identification of macroinvertebrates. In the afternoon we took a trip to the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge where we were able to do hands-on training in water quality testing and identification of macroinvertebrates. The Refuge staff was very helpful in assisting with the outdoor classroom activities. Upon the completion of the workshop many participants were excited about taking the information they had learned back to their students.
